Committee: 

Community Mental Health Committee

This committee is a group of clinicians who are interested in the relationship between Community Mental Health (CMH) and psychoanalysis.  Psychoanalysis is anchored in a quality of close care and attention that is often systematically denied to members of disadvantaged communities and difficult to locate in stressed, under-resourced public mental health clinics.  CMH clinicians hold the tension between a variety of institutional, social, and political pressures and constraints. Meanwhile, psychoanalytic thinking sometimes misses the significance of these systemic influences on individual lives.

There is important work to be done in bridging the theoretical and concrete gaps between community work and psychoanalytic practice. The CMH committee aspires to create a more inclusive home for CMH clinicians within the NCSPP community. In turn, we advocate for greater investment from psychoanalysis in the projects of CMH practitioners- in terms of both theory and practical engagement.

We seek to identify the needs and interests of our various partners both in CMH and NCSPP.  We invite our community members to engage with us by emailing us.

Community Mental Health Botanical Tour

Course Overview: 

UPDATE: The Botanical Tour is BACK ON for Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 12:45PM. We will have two docents and have upped the capacity to 20 registrants. 

Looking for a chance to connect with community mental health clinicians and with nature and grow relationships with other therapists?   The event will include a guided tour which will allow attendees to learn about conservation, natural patterns of growth, and the sustaining of ecosystems. Following the tour, we’ll have light refreshments and have an opportunity for group discussion on how this reflects the work of psychodynamically informed psychotherapy which in itself is often a plant trying to succeed in a challenging terrain.

Commitment to Equity: 

More and more, we are considering the impacts of the environment, which have previously not been a factor in clinical thinking. This event serves to bring greater awareness of the local flora and fauna in an accessible way while creating a space for connection with others.

Target Audience & Level: 

All clinicians, staff, and trainees who work in community mental health settings are invited to participate.
